Hand-Arm Vibration Syndrome (HAVS) Surveillance

HAVS assessment in the building products/construction/ quarrying sectors have been undertaken by IDC Ltd since the mid 1990’s some 10 years before the Control of Vibration at Work Regulations came into effect.

HAVS assessment is extremely reliant upon employee’s reporting symptoms and being able to sort those with non-organic to organic symptoms in order to determine fitness for exposure, requires experience and considerable interview skills.

The HSE have recommended Tier 1 – 5 approaches and IDC Ltd have taken these and expanded them in order to capture data of significant importance in terms of claim defence.

HAVS assessors at Tier 3 and above and Occupational Physicians will have taken and passed the prescribed competency course for HAVS assessment and via the University of Birmingham.

Unfortunately many populations have been previously exposed and the previous industrial injury claimant population particularly challenging.  Fortunately we have the expertise to address these challenges to robustly advise on fitness for HTV exposure as part of the surveillance program.
