General Information
Employees are required to undertake training if they are to operate Fork Lift Trucks.
Although a medical to confirm general fitness to operate a lift truck is not a statutory requirement it is recommended that the medical is carried out to ensure that employee’s medical status will enable them to operate this type of vehicle safely.
Generally a pre-licensing medical is considered good practice with five yearly assessments from the age of 40 years and a yearly medical from the age of 65 years. In addition any FLT accident or incident, prolonged illness or physical injury receives the recommendation that the medical assessment is repeated to ensure continued fitness.
General Fitness Issues relating to FLT use include:- The musculo-skeletal system should be sufficient such that an employee can mount and dismount and operate a FLT in a safe manner
- Uncontrolled diabetic patients should be medically managed to ensure that they are not suffering from symptoms such as dizziness which may present a hazard when operating an FLT
- Substantial cardiac problems may be a bar to FLT operation
- Dizziness, vertigo and disorders of balance are general bars to FLT operation
- In hazardous environments (particularly where FLT’s and pedestrians interact) FLT operators should be able to hear all warning signals accurately
- Eye sight acuity and horizontal fields (sideways vision) should be sufficient to allow FLT operators to drive safely
- Blood pressure should not be excessively high
- Recent waking epileptic attacks are a bar to FLT operation
- Certain mental illnesses should be carefully considered to ensure that an employee is suitable for FLT duties
- Drug and alcohol dependency are generally a bar to FLT operation
