Hand Arm Vibration Surveillance

Services we offer
  • HAVS surveillance which is used to detect, report and manage vibration related injuries at an early stage
  • Follow-on Occupational Physician referral is arranged for individuals who show signs of vibration injury

Thorough documentation ensures that any previous vibration exposure risk is documented along with any factors which may have otherwise caused symptoms similar in nature to HAVS.

General Information

Exposure to hand transmitted vibration can lead to the development of Hand Arm Vibration Syndrome (previously known as vibration white finger or VWF).

Symptoms relating to exposure are classified in two ways:
  1. Vascular - those symptoms caused as a result of the effect of exposure on the vascular (circulatory or blood supply) system in the hands
  2. Sensorineural - those symptoms caused as a result of the effects of exposure on the nervous system in the hands

HSE Guidance on the subject (HS(G)88) is that individuals with primary Reynaud’s Disease should not be exposed to hand held vibratory equipment.

Health surveillance on exposed workers should be carried out at least annually or more frequently than this if symptoms are apparent.

Carpel Tunnel Syndrome (CTS) is also associated with hand held vibration exposure. CTS is a reportable condition under RIDDOR.
