General Information

Manual handling activities at work can result in a wide range of Musculoskeletal Disorders (MSD’s). Disorders of this type affect muscles, joints, tendons and supporting tissues and are usually associated with pain and loss of function.

MSD’s are the most commonly reported work-related condition in the UK.

In the year 2001/02 12.3 million working days were lost due to musculoskeletal disorders (MSD's). In 1995/6 the cost to society of MSD's amounted to £5.7 billion.
