Night Workers Surveillance
Services we offer- On site health assessments to determine and appropriately manage via an Occupational Doctor those employees who have conditions which may be adversely affected by night work
- Off site paper based screening programmes to determine those employee who are at risk from night working and who thus require further management
- Employee counseling services such that individuals can make informed decisions with respect to the health risks they may face as a result of night working
General Information
There is a duty on employers under the Working Time Directive to offer employees who are classified as night workers a pre-employment health assessment and regular assessment thereafter.
A night worker is usually considered to be an employee working, on a regular basis, for at least three hours between the hours of 11.00pm and 6.00am.
Some medical conditions are absolute contraindications to night working whilst others require advice and management. In any event all individuals’ suitability for night work should be considered on a case by case basis.
Medical conditions requiring consideration with respect to their affect on an employees’ suitability for night work include:- Diabetes
- Epilepsy
- Heart Disease
- Intestinal problems
- Kidney disease
- Thyroid or glandular disease
- Mental illness
- Chronic sleep problems
- Back, joint and neck problems
- Asthma and pulmonary disorders
