> IDC site visit to Welsh Slate
Jemima Downham, Account Manager for Breedon UK and myself were fortunate to receive an invite to visit Welsh Slate recently. Whilst IDC are familiar with quarrying operations were are new to the slate sector and of course there are very few UK areas where this highly sought after product remains quarried and abundant.
Not only did we see the entire site, including the spectacular view from the highest point as shown in the image, we also had a tour of the operational facility where the slate split, by hand by a handful of highly skilled workers, to the sizes required to service the market place. Jemima and I both had a turn at hand splitting slate and, just like the Welsh Slate workers, we were the first humans to ever see inside the pieces we split. The exposed surfaces last saw daylight some 500 million years ago, way before mankind or even the dinosaurs.
Thank you Mark and everyone at Welsh Slate for your hospitality and a thoroughly enjoyable day. We look forward to working with you.
